Dragon Ball films are based on both the manga and the Dragon Ball / Dragon Ball Z TV series. The Dragon Ball movies are summarised versions of specific sagas whereas, Dragon Ball Z films are entirely new content made to fit between sagas. The Dragon Ball Z movies often raise chronological problems and contradictions because of the difficulty of fitting a movie into a linearly progressing series.
